natural reserve of mount penna


Mount Pen is a relief to the south-east, which form the Monte Amiata, located in the municipalities of Castell'Azzara and Piancastagnaio. The protected area covers more than one thousand hectares, a land with extensive karstic caves and vast forests of chestnut, beech and maples. From a geological point of view the land contains a strong presence of mercury, extract up to a little more than thirty years ago. Very interesting is the Source of forest, mainly formed by several species of maple. Among the many fauna are protected animals to mention a few, fox, deer, martens el'allocco. Among the special features of the area point out the large population of bats in caves that are close to the country Castell'Azzara.
